Our History

The mission of the Chicago Women's AIDS Project (CWAP) is to address the disparities in health care, prevention and support services for women, youth and communities of color through innovative programs, advocacy and collaboration.  CWAP is the only organization in Chicago solely dedicated to providing gender-specific HIV prevention and care services to women at risk.

CWAP has been providing support services for HIV positive women and their families since 1988, when we started the first support group for women in Chicago.  Currently, we provide a wide range of support services, including professional therapy, peer-led support groups, after-school activities and childcare subsidies, treatment education, financial assistance, leadership and facilitator training. CWAP also provides prevention services including our "Sisters Reaching Out" program offered at our South Office and our "Safe in Chicago" project offered at the Chicago Department of Health free STD Clinics.

Direct care services are available at two full-service sites; our north side location in Rogers Park and our south side location in the South Shore community.
